Protecting Your Property

Recently, I have taken several reports of stolen property from the Sublette High/Middle School campus. The thefts have involved money, wallets, iPods, and cellular phones. The easiest way to protect your property is to never leave the property unattended. Many of the thefts I’ve worked have been unattended property in low traffic areas of the building. One of the main problem areas of the building is the basement locker rooms. When using these areas of the school, don’t assume that your property is safe if you hide it in a bag or under clothing. It has been brought to my attention by different parents that students don’t have locks issued for gym class. I’ve checked into this issue, and it seems that there is a shortage of locks. My recommendation to solve this problem is to always lock your valuables up in either your school locker or vehicle. If you are going to PE class, leave the items locked in your normal school locker while you are in PE class.

I would like to encourage all students to start securing your valuables while at school and school functions. It is important to make a police report immediately if you determine that you have been a victim of a theft. That can be done by calling or coming to the office and contacting Mr. Pena or myself. Statistically speaking, it is much easier to recover stolen property the day it is stolen than waiting a week to start tracking it down. It is also important that you log and keep the serial numbers of the electronics you bring to school. Don’t assume that because your iPod or phone is a color such as lime green that you have the only one.

I can’t seize an iPod just because it is lime green, so it is important to have identifying numbers. The serial number to an iPod can be found stamped on the back of the unit, and on the box that comes in. The serial number to cell phones can normally be found by removing the battery and looking behind the battery compartment.
