New Graduated Drivers License Rules for Teen Drivers

This article will highlight information on the new "graduated drivers license" for teen drivers, which started on January 1, 2010. I want to share what changes are in the new law, so you have a good understanding of the different requirements to get and keep your drivers license.

“Graduated Drivers Licensing”

The new licensing laws have four key changes to the former licensing system.

1. Every teen has to hold a learner’s permit for 12 months before obtaining a restricted or a full license.  
2. Limits teen driver to no more than one non-sibling passenger under the age of 21 during the first six months of full licensing.  
3. Limits late-night driving to 9:00 p.m. during the first six months of full licensing unless driving to and from work or school. 
4. Prohibits the use of cell phones while driving until teens complete the six-month period of passenger and late-night driving restrictions. An exception is in place for reporting emergencies.

Kansas law has penalties in place for violating these new stipulations. A driver who violates these new provisions will face:

1. A 30-day license suspension for the first violation.
2. A 90-day suspension for the second violation.
3. A one-year suspension for the third violation.
